Ustaz Hamza began the 40 Day Tazkiyah programme as a sceptic, planning to prove it doesn’t work, until it started working. Each day uncovers a new blind spot; even if you have done this kind of work before, you find things you have missed; and you don’t need to master everything, because finding one weakness can change everything. For him, writing down three good thoughts every day showed how critical and negative he had been. Now he can’t remember his last negative thought.

I’m obliged to make this video to tell you tazkiyah doesn’t work. That was my exact belief before I started this journey. Instead of doing crazy things like fasting every single day or praying tahajjud every single night, someone is going to tell me to take this step and then this step, and it’s going to lead me to a massive change, for free? Too good to be true.
To prove it doesn’t work, I tried the 40 day tazkiyah programme. I wanted to be honest, I wanted to try it properly so I could prove that it doesn’t work. Until it started working.
Now here is what’s unique and different. Instead of trying to purify your tongue for 40 days, even if I tried to tell myself, “You know what, I have purified my tongue,” the next day, when I’m moving on to the next task, I’m realising there is something I need to work on. So you’re getting exposed to all different blind spots.
Number two: even if you have done this before, you’ll be surprised, when you go through this 40 day journey, how many of these things you have missed.
Number three: you’re not going to be able to do everything over the next 40 days, but you will get to that one blind spot, one weakness, and that will change everything for you.
I didn’t realise how critical and negative I was until I started inviting, and writing down, and sipping my tea with three good ideas every day. And now I don’t even remember the last time I had a negative thought. Good ideas living in my mind, rent free. I recommend this because I’ve benefited from this.
I was transported into the future where I ascended past the state I was in at the time to one where you discover that there are levels to being present with Allah that you didn’t know existed.
If the programme immerses you in one thing, it’s that just as Allah is infinite, the journey to loving Him has no end. This isn’t theoretical.
Participating in the programme shows you in real time practically how you can experience a state of love for Allah that you could spend a lifetime in ritualistic worship and still not achieve.
The beauty of the programme being structured in a communal way is that you’re not flying alone, as you have teachers to guide you everyday and experiencing the journey with others, everyone sharing their unique perspective from the same exercise.
You have nothing to lose participating, even if only for one day, and everything to gain. As one of my teachers once said to me - “a single moment of sincerity is sufficient”.
I am so grateful to Allah for Him opening the path for me to do this programme. And to do it with such amazing people to interact and learn from.
The programme rewires certain things that I had engrained in me and it feels like I finally have the keys to deal with certain parts of life I knew deep down need improving resulting in peace and calmness.
The 40-day immersion experience is an amazing opportunity to get a very honest insight into yourself. It's easy, it's accessible, and yet very powerful.
With a short prompt every day you learn the areas in which you are strong and the areas in which you need to grow and from there you can have an honest audit of your own character.
This is an excellent tool to enable us to develop the objective of our Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam): the beautifying and ennobling of our akhlaq.
